6-Days Rongai Route

The Rongai Route is a popular trekking route to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is known for its beautiful scenery, remote feel, and high success rates. The Rongai Route typically takes 6 to 7 days to complete, offering a slightly longer and more gradual ascent compared to some other routes.

Full Tour Itinerary

Your trek begins at the Rongai Gate, where you’ll complete registration and start hiking through the rainforest. The trail gradually ascends, offering a gentle start to the trek. After approximately 3-4 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Rongai First Cave Camp, where you’ll spend the night.

Leaving Rongai First Cave Camp, you’ll continue ascending through the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you approach Kikelewa Camp, offering scenic views of the surrounding landscape. The trek usually takes around 6-7 hours, and you’ll camp at Kikelewa Camp for the night.

On this day, you’ll trek across the vast open moorland, with the towering peak of Mawenzi on your left. The trail gradually ascends, and after approximately 4-6 hours, you’ll reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp. This campsite offers breathtaking views of Mawenzi Peak and provides an excellent acclimatization opportunity before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Leaving Mawenzi Tarn Camp, you’ll cross the lunar desert of the Saddle, a high-altitude and arid landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The trail becomes steeper as you approach Kibo Hut, the final base camp before the summit attempt. The trek usually takes around 4-6 hours, and at Kibo Hut, you’ll have an early dinner and rest in preparation for the summit push.

Your summit day begins in the early hours of the morning, typically around midnight. You’ll start the challenging ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail is steep and demanding, and it requires endurance and determination. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, you can enjoy the breathtaking views and take memorable photos. Afterward, you’ll descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night.

On the final day of the trek, you’ll descend through the lush rainforest from Horombo Hut to the Marangu Gate. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates, marking your successful clib to the “Roof of Africa.” From there, you’ll transfer back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest and celebration.
